Emery Neal Castle was born on April 13, 1923 in Greenwood County, Kansas. He received a BS and MS in Agricultural Economics from Kansas State University in 1948 and 1950 respectively and a Ph D in Agricultural Economics from Iowa State University in 1952. On July 24, 1911, Oregon Agricultural College's Board of Regents organized the Oregon Extension Service in response to requests from citizens of Oregon for assistance (particularly in agriculture) from the college.
